I had the privilege of serving the Dalit people of India as part of a mission team from my church two years in a row. Imagine living your entire life regarded as untouchable outcasts. Even though the caste system has been outlawed in India, it is still very much alive. Surviving this kind of oppression without the hope of Christ is unfathomable to me. When we taught them that they were each created in the image of God, their faces lit up with hope! During these mission trips, we did everything from teaching classes about basic health and hygiene practices and running a medal camp to playing with children who have been taught that they do not deserve to be acknowledged, hugged or touched by anyone outside of their caste. We brought toothbrushes, toothpaste, medical supplies, vitamins, toys and glasses as well as other necessary items for our work there. Most of the children have never had a toy before or even seen what they looked like in a mirror. I loved photographing them, and they loved seeing themselves in the digital playback of their pictures. India was an experience I will never forget. It is an amazing, vibrant, beautiful country full of bright color and beautiful people. It was an honor to serve in the villages of the Dalit people!
